Forced or Not? Why U.S. Says China Steals Technology

It’s one of the most contentious fronts in the U.S.-China trade war: so-called forced technology transfers. The term refers to a spectrum of practices through which foreign companies that want to operate in China are induced to part with their know-how. That may be simply through a requirement to form a joint venture with a local firm, or more insidious bureaucratic methods like overly intrusive inspections. The Chinese government dismisses allegations of strong-arming as “utterly unfounded,” describing any cooperation as “voluntary” and “based on market principles.” A 2018 report by the U.S. Trade Representative quoted one ex-White House official as saying the transfer requirements are voluntary in the same way a business proposition from Vito Corleone in “The Godfather” was.

Longtime conservative columnist tells why he's a 'Never Trumper'
By Emma Seslowsky, CNN
Tue October 30, 2018

Here are three reasons Goldberg cited for considering himself a "Never Trumper":
1. President Donald Trump doesn't stick to a single ideology
2. Trump has serious 'winner's bias'
3. Trump doesn't take criticism well

Anna Sorokin: The trial of New York's fake heiress.

Just how far can you get in the New York City socialite scene without a real fortune of your own?

Incredibly far, in the case of Anna Delvey - real name Anna Sorokin - who tricked the city's elite into thinking she was a billionaire heiress. She hired a private jet, went to all the best parties, and threw cash at everyone she saw - a $100 (£78) tip if you carried her bag or were her Uber driver.

Narrow my ass.

Другое дело - основания для такого решения: "legal proceedings in Colorado had shown a hostility to the baker's religious views".

Judge Kelly’s ruling was made on procedural grounds and failed to address any underlying First Amendment implications regarding a free press. The broader issue of whether Acosta’s First Amendment rights were violated in the revoking of his press credential will be considered by Judge Kelly in the coming days. Whichever way he eventually rules, the losing party will likely appeal and this matter could drag on for months.

as Maduro unveils raft of economic reforms

Ahead of a major currency overhaul on Monday, when Caracas will start issuing new banknotes after slashing five zeroes off the crippled bolivar, President Maduro detailed other measures he hopes will pull Venezuela out of crisis.

They include hiking the minimum wage by over 3,000%, boosting the corporate tax rateand increasing highly-subsidized gas prices in coming weeks.

"I want the country to recover and I have the formula. Trust me," he said in a nighttime speech broadcast on state television.

Louisiana's State Bond Commission votes 7-to-6 to prohibit Citigroup and Bank of America from participating in an upcoming bond sales due to their "restrictive gun policies," Louisiana State Treasurer John Schroder said in a statement.

“I personally believe the policies of these banks are an infringement on the rights of Louisiana citizens,” said Treasurer Schroder.

In March, Citi said it would requirethat new retail sector clients don't sell firearms to someone who hasn't passed a background check; don't sell to anyone under 21 years old; and don't sell bump stocks or high-capacity magazines.

In April, Bank of America said it would stop landing to clients that make military-style weapons for civilian use.

"No one can convince me that keeping these two banks in this competitive process is worth giving up our rights,” Schroeder said.

Tim Scott и Florida Republican Sen.

Circuit).

Jonathan Chait June 30, 2018 3:43 pm The Other Russia Collusion Scandal Is Breaking Wide Open.

In 2016, Vladimir Putin reaped two of his greatest foreign policy triumphs in quick succession. The United Kingdom voted narrowly to exit the European Union, advancing a longstanding Russian goal of splitting Western allies that have long been united against it. Later that year, the United States voted even more narrowly to elect Donald Trump president.

Jonathan Chait June 22, 2018 1:24 pm Britain Has a Russia Collusion Scandal Now. It Looks Exactly Like Trump’s.
The most important thing to understand about the Russia scandal is that it perfectly fits a clear pattern of behavior. What Vladimir Putin is accused of doing to help Donald Trump win the presidency is essentially identical to what he is either accused of or proven to have done to help many other right-wing candidates in many other countries. As the plot in the United States is slowly exposed, a remarkably similar one in the United Kingdom is quickly surfacing.

Адвокаты утверждают, что attempt to serve the summons was defective under court rules (попытка доставить повестку являлась недостаточной по судебным правилам).

Florida Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s top information technology (IT) aide was arrested Monday attempting to board a flight to Pakistan after wiring $283,000 from the Congressional Federal Credit Union to that country.

Imran Awan, a Pakistani-born IT aide, had access to all emails and files of dozens of members of Congress, as well as the password to the iPad that Wasserman Schultz used for Democratic National Committee business before she resigned as its head in July 2016.

Wasserman Schultz has refused to fire Imran, despite his being a known criminal suspect in a cybersecurity probe for months, and has blocked Capitol Police from searching a laptop they confiscated because it was tied to him.
